More Able

As a school, we have identified pupils who we believe are More Able. We use the Lancashire County Council guidance and also NACE guidance. All staff are trained in relation to the identification of pupils who meet the requirements. Adaptations to the curriculum are planned for alongside any social and emotional support.

Mrs Dugdale, is the leader in school for More Able pupils. The pastoral team also support the leadership of this curriculum area alongside the SENDCO as some pupils may have SEND needs and may also be classed as More Able. As a school we see the child as a whole person and not just as a label. It is important to provide challenge, fluency and depth for all. We are also building an ethos of excellence where talents are celebrated.

All subject leaders and class teachers and teaching assistants have undertaken professional development to support and challenge pupils who are the most able at St James' Lanehead. It is the responsibility of the subject leaders to monitor the provision and progress of the identified pupils.

As a school we involve the families to ensure that they are also aware of the strengths and challenges for their children, in doing this the families are aware and prepared to support their child in their learning.

We also work with local cluster events for PE, Music, arts, drama and subject specific events and competitions. Our school also has excellent links to outside agencies so we are able to work with them to identify pupils who are showing strengths in various areas.

Mrs Hartley (Chair of Governing Board) is the Governor responsible for More Able pupils.

Please see the attached policy for parents and carers of more able children.

If you have any questions please email the school office. If you have evidence that your child is More Able for example from music exams, elite sports, drama then please contact the class teacher so that they can have a discussion with you in terms of the provision for your child. It is our intention that pupils will have a profile for them so that everyone working with the pupils has the support for the child to flourish and their ability and talents to be celebrated and recognised.
