At St James’ Lanehead we are passionate about taking our school curriculum to the next level. We do so with the use of themed weeks throughout school on curriculum subjects; Themed Learning Weeks. These are organised primarily by the Subject Leaders and all staff are then involved in helping the children really engage in their learning.
Themed Learning Weeks use a variety of difference activities as teaching tools and the children really enjoy the change to their normal school week.
Please see below for a closer look at previous Themed Learning Weeks.
World Book Day
Our World Book Day had a focus on Dragons. We began our day having a whole school worship and the teachers ran in dressed up as dragons! It was very exciting. Each class then spent the day completing their own dragon related activities. One class created and painted their own dragon eggs and then wrote instructions on how to catch a dragon!
Safer Internet Day
Today we have spent the full day learning about Internet Safety. The topic was – ‘Together for a better internet’.
We started the day with finding out what internet actually means. We then made some internet connections and pretended that we were sending messages across the world to each other.
After lots of discussion we know now the importance of asking our parents’ permission to access the internet and to never give personal information out to people we do not know.
STEM Day
On STEM Day, the children evaluated the structures within school and outside on the playground. We discussed what made them safe and strong. We then experimented with different ways to join materials together and learnt how to make a fold by measuring and scoring. The children were then visited by Jack from Futaba who told us all the fantastic opportunities with in the engineering trade, right here in Burnley! We were very impressed with the robots and Jack was very impressed with the children’s questions. In the afternoon, the children planned and made their own animal enclosure. They then evaluated against the design criteria.
No Pens Day
In Key Stage 1, the children had a fantastic day learning without any pens or pencils. We listened to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and collected adjectives from the text. We made porridge and tasted it. The children thought of some really interesting adjectives. We then watched Shrek and collected data to create a pictogram and bar graph. In the afternoon we found about what is the same and what is different about humans by playing a Guess who game.
Mad Science Day
Science has been a big theme in school recently with the WOW Science Day we had. This involved a visit from Mad Science who will be starting an after school club session with us after Christmas. The children really
enjoyed the themed day and cannot wait for the next one!
PSHE Week
This was the first themed week of the year. The focus was friendship and every class in school participated. We used many different learning styles to enable children to learn strategies for creating and keeping friendships.
Much of our learning linked to Christian Values that we live out each day in school and beyond.
Every class spent part of each day completing different activities that supported them to understand what makes a good friend. This then lets the children know the qualities that other children look for in a friend and how they can show them. They then moved onto how to remain friends with each other and strategies for dealing with disputes in appropriate ways.
The children enjoyed the learning and developed a solid understanding of friendships that we can see support their life in school.
