Our Vision and Christian Values
In the summer of 2017, building upon our established ‘All Special in God’s Eyes’ strapline the school community came together to revisit the school’s vision. We had many meetings with Diocesan Advisers, Governors, Parents, Staff and children.
We all felt that we had a strong sense of Christian purpose and a calling to serve the community. We looked at three questions with the Diocesan Adviser:
Who are we?
Why are we here?
Then how do we live?
We created a mission statement based upon theological roots from Psalm 92 and John 10:10. It was felt that the most important thing to us all was that we do have Jesus Christ beside us to support and guide us and with this we feel that we can all grow, learn and flourish .
The school community understands the theological roots. As a school we also included key research and reading from The Church of England Vision for Education : Deeply Christian, Serving the Common Good, the new SIAMS inspection framework and Valuing All God’s children documentation. The Board of Education Vision.
We decided to ensure that the vision, mission and theological roots needed to be embedded across the school. This was achieved in many different ways. For example, we produced signs across the school in every room; we ensured that the website and all correspondence with the school included the information. We worked with the children to understand what it meant to them – the way that they interpret is “ being a St James’ pupil’ . We measured the impact through discussion with staff and staff questionnaires relating to the vision. We also surveyed parents at parent’s evenings.
Middle leaders ensure that SMSC is planned for throughout the curriculum to enable the vision to permeate all aspects of the school. Decisions relating to finance, staffing and procedures are always brought back to the vision. We also ensure that the children have home school values resources for them to use at home with their families.
As part of the re-visioning process the schools’ existing Christian values were reviewed and we decided to keep the current values. We also felt it was important to keep the strapline “All Special in God’s Eyes” the children and staff liked the strap line, and they also had acts of worship to support this. It was felt that in doing so we can keep the values we can use them as a tool kit to support the vision of the school.
The Christian vision is rooted in the desire to nurture the whole community, flourishing both now and in the future. The vision permeates all aspects of the school life.
Each half term we learn about the teaching of Jesus Christ through the Gospel values.
Our school is also a member of the Burnley Faith Centre where we meet members of our Christian Faith and also members from other faiths. We believe that the teaching of Jesus Christ is rooted in our curriculum and intertwines everything we do.
Children regularly lead and plan worship for their parents and families.
Each class in our school has a Value Bear, which together make up our Christian values. These include:
