At St James’ Lanehead, we are in the process of developing a carefully targeted and bespoke curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum in a way that engages our children and staff and enables us to ensure that all of our children flourish during their time at our school. Curriculum development is a continuous cycle of evaluation and improvement at St James’ Lanehead – largely due to the vertically grouped nature of some of our classes. As a result, we have recently embarked on an ambitious project to rethink and redesign our curriculum offer.
The result of our review is our new curriculum – a curriculum that celebrates the mission of our school, the sense of community of our local area and our aspirations for our children to leave as global citizens. Embedded throughout our curriculum is a thorough understanding of who our children are – where they come from, why they should be proud of where they live and where they are in relation to the rest of the world.
We are proud of the breadth of our curriculum which ensures that children:
· are able to fully immerse themselves in the arts; · stay healthy through our provision of physical education; · learn to create and to code in Computing and Design Technology and understand the world – both past and present.
We believe that the ability to read with fluency and understanding is essential for children. The teaching of reading therefore underpins our entire curriculum with topics centred around engaging texts. We take pride in fostering a love of reading for all. Adults in the school are role models for our children; and time is taken every day for the children to enjoy reading and being read to.
Our curriculum is for our children. We constantly strive to review and improve our provision to ensure the best available curriculum offer for our community of St James’ Lanehead.
