English

In English, we are looking at science fiction writing. We are reading Blast Off By Tom Bradman as a novel to support the development of our ideas. We have explored a number of other texts as well. The outcome of our work will be to write a short science fiction story. We would like to keep the stories short so that will be eligible to enter the BBC2 500 words competition.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we are learning to use new methods to complete the four different mathematical operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We then used these new skills to solve problems relating to each of the areas. We like the new maths scheme we are using though we are finding it a bit harder that some of the work we previously did. However as we have completed lots of work recently on the Christian values of courage and perseverance we are applying this to our lessons to make sure we learn everything we need to in year 5.

We have been working extremely hard to learn our times tables as quickly as we can and in any order. Please use the multiplication grid below to rapidly recall your times tables. We are very competitive in Class 5/6 and everybody is challenging themselves to be at the top of the leader board on Times Table Rockstars!

Science

In Science we have learnt about States of Matter. We have sorted items into solids, liquids and gases and acted as particles in each of them. We know that in a solid, the particles are close together, in a liquid they are more spread out and in a gas, they are even further apart. We investigated how to change materials from solid to liquid and gas s and back again and also what happens when we mix them together. We explored when change is reversible and not (irreversible) We planned investigations to identify and explore these changes and carried them out independently.

Topic

Religious Education

In RE, we are deepening our understanding of the messages the Bible tells us by reading and interpreting various Bible stories. We have been using these stories to discuss how the Bible tells us we should live our lives. We have explored our own preferences and views and begun to make some valid interpretations and put forward some interesting persuasions.

We have also investigated art work, representing the story of Jesus’ second and here are some of our responses as to what we think it might look like.

This term we will be investigating how Christians around the world celebrate Easter.

We are also completing a unit of work investigating different types of Christian cross. When these are complete we will be displaying them along the corridor outside our classroom for everyone to see.

Class Worship

In our Class Worship we explained what trust meant to us and who we could put our trust in. We also told the story of Brother Andrew the Bible Smuggler, who put his trust in God and risked his life to smuggle Bibles to countries that found it hard to get hold of them.

Curriculum Enhancement

There’s Snow Place Like St James’

The children has lots of fun playing together in the snow. Our class said: “It was fun to play out in the snow with my friends because we don’t usually get enough snow to play with. Its a shame there wasn’t more so we could build snow men.”

Christmas Enterprise Event

We worked hard and used our DT skills to make Christmas decorations to sell at our Enterprise Sale. We are raising money to pay for extra activities for all the children in Key stage 2. We have given The School Council some ideas as to how we would like the money to be spent on and they will be making a decision soon. We are excited to find out if our ideas will be selected

Remembrance Day

As a school we commemorated a 100 years since the First World War ended. In class we used the IPads to find a soldier who lived near us and used a variety of sources to find out what we could about them. So we could make a ribbon of remembrance for local soldiers. At 11:00 we all observed two minutes silence in honor the fallen. In the afternoon we planted our own poppies with class R/1.

Evacuee Experience Trip

Recently we went on a class trip to find out what it might have been like to have been evacuated in World War Two. We learned lots of things about what life might have been like and looked at artifacts from the time. The highlight of the day was the steam train journey and the role play billeting.

Reading at the Community Centre

We went to the community centre to share some of our favourite reading books with some of the older members of the community. We read to them and then they shared their favourite reading experiences with us. We were amazed to find that some of the books we enjoy reading today were the same ones that they read when they were younger.

We enjoyed our afternoon so much that we have asked if we can come back and share some of the games we play with them.

Maths Morning

We spent the morning using practical objects to solve math problems in groups. We used plates, counters and cups to help with our challenges.

RE Day

We thought about how we could help the Sierra Leone through the Bishops harvest appeal. We learnt a little bit about the Sierra Leone and thought about how we might be able to help improve peoples lives there. We also learnt about how different Christian values could help us achieve this and make us better people.

Science Day

After a WOW! Science assembly in which we learned lots of science facts and saw some fiery experiments. We then helped to teach Reception class about how our digestion system works using a plastic bag and tights.
