Welcome to Class 1/2. This Class has a combination of Year 1 and Year 2 children and is part of Key Stage 1.

We are studying the author Anthony Browne. We have been reading and discussing some wonderful books looking at the features that make them distinctive. We have been using our talk 4 writing techniques to help us explore and re-tell the story and then we have written our own alternative endings.

We have been learning about grouping and multiplication. We have used practical resources to make groups and then write the number equations. We have been learning that multiplication is cummutative.
We have been learning mathematics using a variety of concrete approaches and hands on experience. We have been exploring Addition and Subtraction, developing our skills and using them to solve problems.
We have been working scientifically to explore and discuss materials and testing their properties. We went on a material hunt around school to see what different material we could find and will now move onto investigate their properties.
Brainy Bear had a hole in his umbrella. We had to use our investigating skills to find the best material to fix the umbrella.
In the Autumn term, we looked at the topic of seasonal changes. Here we are investigation shadows. We found out that the day length changes each day and varies from season to season.
We will be exploring the life of Mary Seacole and finding out what a very special person she was and the sacrifice she made to help others.
We have been using the theme of Mary Seacole to explore moving pictures. We have learnt how to make a lever mechanism and a wheel mechanism. We will soon be making our own pictures using these skills.
We learning all about what it means to be special and why Jesus is special. We have heard Bible stories about how Jesus chose the disciples.
We heard the story of “Jesus Feeds the 5000” and had a our own picnic. We acted the story out and imagined what it would have been like to have witnessed the miracle.
In the Autumn term, we learnt about the Bible and why it is special. We heard stories from The Old Testament and The New Testament and retold them using Talk For Writing. We then heard about The Dead Sea Scroll and made our own sacred scrolls.
In December, the children were challenged to create a Christmas tree. The design brief specified that the finished product must:
We explored existing designs and then we designed our own. We then made and evaluated our own Christmas trees.
We had a shock when we came in after lunch. Someone had left straw and carrots all over the classroom. We were very confused. After some investigating we realised that a reindeer had come to visit us. His name is Lightening and he is two and a half years old. We had fun learning about reindeer and having a cuddle.
In order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of WW1, our school had a special learning day all about the war. We found out about the soldiers in the trenches and why people wear poppies to remember. In the afternoon, Key Stage 2 joined KS1, Year 3 and Class 1/2 worked together to create a piece of artwork to remember the war. We then had a school gallery to show case our learning.
In music we are learning the song Hey You! Here we are finding the pulse.
The children had a fantastic day learning without any pens or pencils. We listened to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and collected adjectives from the text. We made porridge and tasted it. The children thought of some really interesting adjectives. We then watched Shrek and collected data to create a pictogram and bar graph. In the afternoon we found about what is the same and what is different about humans by playing a Guess who game.
